"Castle", another one of my earliest and one of my favourites. "Church" is a study in how to while away an hour, and "Home" is the result of an experiment with tempera. "The Arrow" is a part of Canadian history with a personal connection for me, and "Hope" was taken from an issue of International Wildlife - the image "spoke" to me. The final two images in this room is "The Room", which is the result of an art course exercise, and "Dawn", one of a series of 12 pictures done in tempera.

Castle" is a pencil study of Mad King Ludwig's castle in Neuschwanstein, Germany.  This castle served as the inspiration for the Walt Disney trademark castles.  Carbon pencils, 1998.
Left: I drew "Church" on a lovely spring day while I had an hour to kill waiting for a doctor's appointment in 1999.  I believe it is St Michael's, the big United church in the Church/Wellesley area.  I may have the name and location incorrect, but I remember I was almost late for my appointment.

"Home" is from the early 1990's.  I was experimenting again with tempera, and this was the result.  Oddly enough I find this piece quite comforting and calming.  I hope it's more or less evident why I called it what I did.
"The Arrow".   What a beautiful plane it was.  I saw its inaugural flight as my father had worked on the plane for almost 8 years.  He then lost his job in the layoffs that followed the cancellation of the project.  That particular political decision set Canada's aeronautic industry back decades.  Tempera paints, 1999.
"Hope" was taken from an issue of International Wildlife.  It is a picture of Thompson's Gazelles crossing the Serengeti at sunrise.  I called it "Hope" because I see openness, and inspiration, and the beauty of the coming day dispersing the clouds of night.  It is still one of my favourites.  A couple of the gazelles probably seem a bit odd in shape - I assure you this is an exact copy of how they looked in the picture.

"The Room" also resulted from an art course exercise.  The object of the exercise was to paint a part of your house using only two colours.  This is the corner of my living room, painted with tempera paint in the late 1980's.

"Dawn" is one of a series of 12 pictures done in tempera in the early 1990's.  It is taken from the Ave Maria scene in the movie " Fantasia" (c. Walt Disney Productions).  I was teaching the film, section by section, to a music appreciation class. One of the students, after we had seen the entire film at the end of the course, asked one of those heart-stopping questions you sometimes get in teaching:   "Miss C., why does everything that's so beautiful have to be so sad?"
